Throughout its history, Scotty’s Contracting & Stone has expanded its capabilities through strategic acquisitions of asphalt plants, quarries, and operations. In 1999, the company joined Houchens Industries, one of the largest and most diverse 100% employee-owned companies in the US. The move helped to solidify Scotty’s future and ensure retirement benefits for its employee-owners.

Today, Scotty’s Contracting & Stone continues to be one of the top asphalt producers in Kentucky, completing a substantial portion of roadway contracts in the state every year.

A Journey Through Scotty’s History

1960s

Start of the Journey

James (Scotty) Scott began his career in the highway contracting industry as a summer worker with the Kentucky Department of Transportation (KYDOT). After graduating from the University of Engineering Technology, he was put in charge of the street widening/improvement program for Cumberland County in 1967.

1970s

Early Growth

In 1972 Scotty purchased the paving business from Mr. Gaddie and started what is now known as Scotty’s Contracting & Stone, LLC.
Within three years of forming, Scotty’s opened its first office headquarters in 1975. The company continued to grow rapidly, requiring another move to a larger office in 1979, where the company remained headquartered for the next 20 years.

  • 1972: Scotty purchases paving business from R.E. Gaddie and forms Scotty’s Paving
  • 1975: Purchased asphalt plant in Bowling Green, KY and built new office and shop
1980s

Strategic Acquisitions in Asphalt & Aggregates

A period of explosive growth throughout Kentucky, the 1980s brought significant expansion to Scotty's. The company began accquiring multiple quarries, asphalt plants and paving companies. But, it didn't stop there.

  • 1984: Purchased construction division of Medusa Aggregates including two asphalt plants
  • 1986: Acquires 4 asphalt plants in KY and TN from Rogers Group
1990s

Continued Growth & Employee-Ownership

The momentum from the 80s pushed onward into into the 90s. As Scotty's continued to flourish and grow, they built a new corporate office and technology center in Bowling Green, KY in 1998.

  • 1999: Scotty sells company to its employees to form Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
2000s

A New Millennium

The new millennium brought new opportunities for growth and security for Scotty’s employee- owners by joining Houchens Industries, one of the largest ESOPs in the US. In the second half of the decade, the company purchased Ragland Quarry in Leitchfield, KY and opened its new South Plant asphalt facility in Bowling Green.

2010s

Growth & Partnership

Scotty’s deepened its ability to serve the Kentucky markets with several strategic acquisitions and asset purchases including Glass Paving in Glasgow and a hot-mix plant in Fort Knox, KY. It also formed a joint venture with Yager Materials, Inc. to build the S&Y liquid asphalt terminal to further vertically integrate operations.

  • 2012: Scotty’s celebrates 40 years as one of Kentucky’s leading contractors.
  • 2016: Establishment of new aggregates yard in Elizabethtown, KY
2020s

Paving the Way for the Next 50 Years of Scotty’s

The 2020s mark the fifth decade of Scotty’s Contracting & Stone serving Kentucky and the surrounding region. With an ever-growing team of talented individuals and strategic expansion going strong, the future is bright for the next 50 years of our company’s history.
